Welcome to the 920 Discussion Group
for Fall, 1999. If you have read the instructions and tips below, click on the link above
to reach the discussion group itself.
The mechanics of how to post messages and replies:
- Unless it's short, it's best to compose your message in your word processor or text editor (e.g. NotePad) offline, save
a copy on your hard drive, and then copy and paste into the dialog box when you are
online.
- To start a new thread (a new message, which will appear by itself above all the others)
click on the blue Post link at the top of the page. To post the message (i.e. send it to
the server so that others can read it) do NOT push the blue Post link again (that will
simply open up a new empty dialog box). Rather, scroll down the page to the gray buttons
at the bottom.
- If you make a mistake, then email me and I can fix it.
I can't delete messages, but I can change them.
- To reply to a message already posted, open that message and click on the blue Reply link
at the top. Proceed as above. This message will be threaded to the message to which you
are replying.
Tips on the content of messages:
- Stick to a single point in single message. If you have more than one point to raise,
then post more than one message.
- Keep it short and concise. Think long and hard about how to make your point, or raise
your question, in a simple and clear way. You should spend twice as long and make it half
the length.
- Set the question up. Try to make the
message as self-contained as possible, even if it is threaded to another
message. Also, try to make it understandable to someone who has not read
exactly the same articles as you have.
- Try not to make it personal. We are concerned with
philosophical issues.
