Requirements for Admission

The Department's requirements for an undergraduate major in philosophy are the completion of eight philosophy courses amounting to at least 27 semester credits. These credits must include: (a) a course in Logic (Philos. 211 or 511); (b) a course in Ancient Philosophy (Philos. 430); (c) a course in Modern Philosophy (Philos. 432); (d) at least five advanced courses (most of the 400-699 group, including 430, 432, and 511) of at least 3 credits each. Of these 27 credits, at least one course must be chosen from each of two categories.

An applicant who does not have an undergraduate major or the equivalent may be admitted with deficiencies in the major. Admission with deficiencies requires a student to have had at least 12 semester credits in philosophy courses.

The Department may recommend in exceptional cases that a student whose grade point average is below 3.0 be admitted to Graduate School on probation. However, a student who meets neither the course requirement nor the grade point requirement cannot be admitted to Graduate School. Such students may consult the Chairperson or Assistant to the Chairperson regarding ways to remove such deficiencies.
