Subject: (Permanent) Change of Office Hours
Prof. Rauti and I have decided to implement a "regrade" system this semester to protect you from accidental errors you may make on homework (i.e. errors that misrepresent your actual ability). You will turn in your homework for the first time on (or before) the dates listed on the syllabus, then I will identify errors (if there are any) and hand it back to you, then you will have an opportunity to correct it and turn it in a second time. You will receive full credit both for answers that were right the first time and for those completely corrected the second time; partial credit will be given only for answers which you have attempted to correct (and on exams). For the first five assignments, the second due date (the date when regrades are due) will be on the Thursday exactly two weeks after you first received the questions.

Although we expect this system to significantly increase the amount of work I need to do as a grader (and I won't get paid anything more for it), we believe it will be of great benefit to you. We have been warned by other graders who have experimented with similar policies that students can abuse regrade systems by being careless on the first go around. Since there are sixty-six of you and I will be obliged to return your homeworks with extensive comments, I will end up with several hours of extra work even on the first grading alone if you do not take each assignment as seriously as you normally would. I'll trust you to sufficiently appreciate what we are doing to take care that you not abuse our system.

For logistical reasons, you will have only a few days to make corrections before passing in your homework for a regrade, and you may want me to answer questions during that time about the comments I've made on your "first try" homeworks. Therefore, I am moving my Monday office hour (5:15-6:15PM) to Wednesday (4:30-5:30PM). That means I will have two office hours on Wednesday--one starting at 9:45 and the other starting at 4:30--which should, hopefully, give everyone a chance to meet with me during that critical day right before the regrades are due. My other office hours (including any on Monday) will be by appointment.

Best Wishes,

Chris
