A futuristic verse for
The Star Spangled Banner

Chris Lang

Many of the things we associate with patriotism are militaristic: Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, flags, and even the battle described by our National Anthem. Someday, military campaigning will cease, but patriotic symbols will continue to have significance because, although Americans may progress beyond barbaric use of force, we shall always strive for a better world.

And do we still see, in our day's "sharpened" sight,

What was once proudly hailed, free from modern suspicion?

When, perhaps naive, faith ‘gainst an uncertain plight,

Gave pioneers hope and the wayward direction—

          For each threat of despair

          Made them just more aware

That strife, be it right, was worthy to bear!

Today are there any aspects of those old ideals to save?

As long as we are free, there is cause to be brave!
